Essential Fatty Acids

Recent research has highlighted the critical importance of two compounds known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) in human health.

The Essential Fatty Acids are Linolenic Acid (LA), also known as Omega 6 and Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), also known as Omega 3.

They are the active ingredients in every bodily process you can name and are, in fact, more important than vitamins, minerals or even proteins. They are the substance and foundation of life energy and without them there is no life. The body cannot make them so they must be obtained either from the diet or by supplementation.

Both EFA's are present in the food we eat but due to the modern processing of this food and the usage of refined vegetable oils sourced from soya, sunflower, corn and sesame we receive far greater amounts of LA (Omega 6) and only 16% of our body's ALA (Omega 3) requirements.

The two sub-groups are both separately essential meaning that there must be enough of each sub group in our diet. Having more of either one of them will never compensate for insufficient of the other.

Because of the clear inbalance of LA and ALA in the diet it is not unusual to supplement LA but it is becoming increasingly clear that ALA supplementation is not only necessary but very important. Modern thinking is that this inbalance is a probable cause of the rising incidence of such chronic conditions as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, arthritis and asthma in the urbanised population.

Recent research proofs that Omega 3 benefits persons suffering from arthritis due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Flax seed has the highest concentration of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids of any known plant source. Flexiflax capsules consist of a minimum of 500mg powder from Flax seed sprouts high in concentrations of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids as well as lignans, sterols/sterolins, digestive enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Compleat Adult capsules consist of a minimum of 270mg pure flax seed sprouts and a minimum of 270g plant sprout powder derived from barley, soya, lupin, fenugreek and sunflower sprouts.
